Το Ξενοδοχείο

Στα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα, η Αθήνα γνώρισε μια αξιοσημείωτη αύξηση στην κατασκευή κατοικιών, ιδιαίτερα στα κεντρικά της διαμερίσματα, σηματοδοτώντας μια σημαντική άνθηση στον τομέα των ακινήτων. Αυτή η περίοδος χαρακτηρίστηκε από μια ακμάζουσα οικονομία, τροφοδοτούμενη από νέα κατασκευαστικά έργα και την αυξανόμενη ζήτηση για υπηρεσίες εσωτερικής διακόσμησης.

Η οδός Μητροπόλεως, που βρίσκεται δίπλα στην πλατεία με το ίδιο όνομα, αναδείχθηκε σε κομβικό κέντρο του εμπορίου υφασμάτων στην Αθήνα. Ο δρόμος έσφυζε από οικογενειακές επιχειρήσεις, πολλές από τις οποίες καθιερώθηκαν ως γνωστά ονόματα συνώνυμα της ποιότητας και της δεξιοτεχνίας. Οι επιχειρήσεις αυτές λειτουργούσαν συνήθως σε κτίρια όπου το ισόγειο εξυπηρετούσε ως χώρος λιανικής πώλησης, το υπόγειο ως αποθηκευτικός χώρος και οι ανώτεροι όροφοι ως κατοικίες για τις οικογένειες.

Ανάμεσα στα επιφανή υφαντουργικά σπίτια, ξεχώριζε η επιχείρηση της οικογένειας Αγγελοπούλου, η οποία τελικά ανέβηκε να γίνει μια από τις πιο επιδραστικές και ευκατάστατες δυναστείες της Ελλάδας. Η εκλεκτή τους πελατεία περιλάμβανε σημαντικά σημεία, όπως το Παλάτι Ηρώδου Αττικού και το Θερινό Παλάτι του Τατοΐου, αντικατοπτρίζοντας την κοινωνική τους θέση και τη φήμη τους.

Με την έναρξη του 20ού αιώνα, η οικογένεια Αγγελοπούλου μετέφερε την έδρα της εταιρείας της στη συμβολή της Πλατείας Μητροπόλεως με την οδό Βενιζέλου, όπου υψώθηκε το εμβληματικό «Κίτρινο Κτίριο». Αυτό το αρχιτεκτονικό κόσμημα διέθετε μεγαλοπρεπείς κατοικίες στον πρώτο όροφο, με ψηλά ταβάνια και ευρύχωρες πόρτες προς τον κήπο. Από αυτό το σημείο, η οικογένεια Αγγελοπούλου ήταν μάρτυρας καθοριστικών στιγμών της ελληνικής ιστορίας και είχε την τιμή να υποδέχεται μέλη της βασιλικής οικογένειας, που επισκέπτονταν συχνά την κοντινή Μητρόπολη.

Ωστόσο, προς το τέλος του αιώνα, η οικογένεια Αγγελοπούλου αποχαιρέτησε την ιστορική της κατοικία, μετακομίζοντας στο εύπορο προάστιο Ψυχικό. Στη συνέχεια, το Κίτρινο Κτίριο πέρασε από μετατροπές, λειτουργώντας προσωρινά ως κατάστημα γενικού εμπορίου και αργότερα ως δημοφιλές καφέ. Δυστυχώς, με το πέρασμα του χρόνου, το κτίριο έπεσε σε αχρηστία και παραμέληση, καταλήγοντας σε εγκατάλειψη στις αρχές του 21ου αιώνα, σηματοδοτώντας το τέλος μιας εποχής για αυτό το κάποτε ζωντανό ορόσημο του εμπορικού και κοινωνικού τοπίου της Αθήνας.

This period witnessed a flourishing economy driven by new construction projects and the burgeoning demand for interior decoration services.

Mitropoleos Street, nestled adjacent to the square bearing the same name, emerged as the bustling epicenter of Athens’ textile trade. The street teemed with family-run businesses, many of which established themselves as household names synonymous with quality and craftsmanship. These businesses typically operated from buildings where the ground floor served as the retail space, the basement functioned as storage facilities, and the upper floors were designated as living quarters for the families.

Among the prominent textile houses, the Angelopoulou family’s establishment stood out, eventually ascending to become one of Greece’s most influential and affluent dynasties. Their esteemed clientele extended to prestigious landmarks such as the Herodou Attikou Palace and the Summer Palace of Tatoi, reflecting their status and renown in society.

As the 20th century dawned, the Angelopoulou family relocated their company headquarters to the intersection of Mitropoleos Square and Benizelos Street, where the iconic “Yellow Building” rose to prominence. This architectural gem boasted grand living quarters on the first floor, characterized by soaring ceilings and expansive patio doors. From this vantage point, the Angelopoulou family bore witness to pivotal moments in Greece’s history and had the privilege of welcoming royalty, who frequented the nearby Mitropolis Church.

However, by the end of the century, the Angelopoulou family bid farewell to their historic residence, moving to the affluent suburb of Psychiko. Subsequently, the Yellow Building underwent a transformation, serving briefly as a general goods retail shop before transitioning into a popular café. Regrettably, the passage of time saw the building fall into disuse and neglect, ultimately succumbing to abandonment in the early 21st century, marking the end of an era for this once-vibrant landmark of Athens’ commercial and social landscape.
